At the Bottomless Toy Chest, Every Penny Counts!”

By Mattye Tierce
The toy chest in the lobby, and the posters in the hall are all signs that point towards The Bottomless Toy Chest!! This non-profit organization helps deliver toys to children with cancer. Initiated by Mickey Guisewite, The Bottomless Toy chest delivers their toys to major hospitals in Michigan like DMC, Beaumont, St. John’s Hospital, Sparrow, and University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. When Beverly Elementary student Aidan Johnson-Hill heard about this cause, he suggested it to the instructional specialist, Kelly Tomasik. Mrs. Tomasik helped it become a part of Beverly’s Service Learning Projects. We helped with this cause by setting up our own “bottomless toy chest” in the lobby for the toys people brought to school.  After the designated time for collecting toys was done, we had to take the cellophane-wrapped toys to the BTC warehouse. On February 1st, we all rode in cars to the warehouse in Bloomfield Hills, MI, where the toys are kept and delivered. We met Mickey and learned more about the BTC. The reasons they must wrap the toys in cellophane are:

  • It help kids with weak immune systems by keeping the toys clean
  • It gives the children a choice of one thing or another with the see-through container while the toys stay wrapped
  • Wrapped presents give the children a sense of joy and excitement.

Mickey started the BTC after her son was diagnosed with cancer. She hopes the Bottomless Toy Chest will help bring happiness to children as they grow healthy and strong. With every toy, we can bring ecstasy to patients who are less fortunate than us.

Beverly donates to the Bottomless Toy Chest and helps kids with cancer!

By Lilly Richards
This winter Beverly students had a toy drive for the Bottomless Toy Chest! The Bottomless Toy Chest is an organization that is devoted to donating toys to children who have cancer and have to undergo unpleasant treatments while being in the hospital. These toys brighten the spirits and distract sick children which helps them recover quicker. They also let these kids have a choice which they don’t get to have often.
After about a hundred toys were donated to the school, me and a few other Beverly students went and delivered the collected toys to a Bottomless Toy Chest warehouse. We wrapped a few of the donated toys from our school and bagged some smaller gifts. These toys will be delivered to children with cancer in Michigan hospitals. If you would like to contribute to the Bottomless Toy Chest, you can do it all year long by mailing a donation to The Bottomless Toy Chest, P.O. Box 623, Bloomfield Hills, MI  48303-9998 or donating online at https://bottomlesstoychest.org/Donate_.html.

Our New Blog

Welcome to our new Beverly Banner Blog. We are excited about this transition from our newspaper publication to a blog format. This will allow us to publish our articles much more frequently and a format that we feel will be more student friendly since this is their publication.

We are looking for a few students per grade that would be regular contributors to our blog writing 1-2 blogs per month. They can blog about classroom projects, field trips, events, extra-curricular activities or just the life as a student.  All blogs will be proofed by an adult for appropriateness. We welcome guest bloggers at any time also,

This is a great opportunity for the student to strengthen writing skills and become fluent authors. Content and questions can be submitted to thebeverlybanner@yahoo.com.
